FEC Statistics Probe

The FEC Statistics probe collects detailed forward error correction (FEC) metrics per interface on Junos OS Evolved devices. The probe automatically collects data in IBA and stores it in MetricDB for 30 days for historical analysis and trend evaluation.

Configuration interface for creating a predefined probe. FEC Statistics is selected with label FEC Statistics. Collection period set to 2 Minutes. History retention set to 30 Days. Streaming stages set to FEC Statistics. Probe collects per-interface Forward Error Correction statistics for specific hardware platforms running version 23.4X100-D31 or later. Create button and Create Another checkbox available.

Supported Platforms

The probe supports Junos OS Evolved release 23.4x100-D31 or later on the following hardware classes:

  • QFX5140

  • QFX5230

  • QFX5240

  • QFX5250

Metrics

The FEC statistics probe collects the following metrics:

Metrics Description
Pre‑FEC Bit Error Rate (BER) Bit error rate of a communication link before any FEC is applied.
FEC Uncorrected Errors Number of FEC codewords that could not be corrected (measured in codewords).
FEC Correction Histogram Detailed breakdown showing number of symbol errors corrected per FEC codeword, capturing the full correction distribution:

  • Displays up to 16 bins for RS-544 (Bin0 through Bin15).

  • Converts collected FEC histogram values from Bin0 through Bin15 to a rate by calculating the delta per unit of time (default period of 2 minutes).

  • Stores each bin independently to maintain maximum granularity for detailed future analysis.
