PTX12008 Field-Replaceable Units

Learn about the field-replaceable units in the PTX12008.

Field-replaceable units (FRUs) are components that you can replace at your site. These components are of two types:

  • Hot-insertable and hot-removable—You can remove and replace these components without powering off the router or disrupting the router functions.

  • Hot-pluggable—You can remove and replace these components without powering off the router, but the router function is interrupted until you replace the component.

Routing and Control Boards (RCBs)

  • In a premium configuration:

    • The primary RCB is hot-pluggable.

    • The backup RCB is hot-insertable and hot-removable.

  • In a base configuration: The RCB is not hot-pluggable or hot-insertable and hot-removable.

    There is only one RCB in a base configuration. Therefore, if you remove the RCB, the router shuts down. To prevent disruption in traffic, take the chassis offline. If a temporary disruption is acceptable, you can install a replacement RCB in the second RCB slot. The system restarts to select a primary RCB and a backup RCB. If necessary, you can switch the primary RCB and a backup RCB using the request chassis routing-engine master command.
