Platform and Infrastructure Requirements

This topic describes the platform, compute, memory, and software prerequisites to install Juniper Routing Director.

Before you install the Routing Director software, ensure that your system meets the requirements that we describe in these sections.

Software Requirements

You can deploy Routing Director on one or more servers of the following VM deployment platforms:

  • VMware ESXi

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and Ubuntu kernel-based virtual machines (KVMs).

You must install the libvirt, libvirt-daemon-kvm, bridge-utils, and qemu-kvm packages. The hypervisor requires an x86-64 CPU.

  • Proxmox VE

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS)

You must have login credentials to AWS with permissions to create, modify, and delete VMs, security groups, load balancers, IAM roles and policies, along with access to the S3 bucket.

Hardware Requirements

This section describes the minimum hardware resources that are required on each node virtual machine (VM) in the Routing Director deployment cluster, for evaluation purposes or for small deployments.

The compute, memory, and disk requirements of the cluster nodes can vary based on the intended capacity of the system. The intended capacity depends on the number of devices to be onboarded and monitored, types of sensors, and frequency of telemetry messages. If you increase the number of devices, you'll need higher CPU and memory capacities. Ensure that CPU and memory resources are not oversubscribed.

Note:

To get a scale and size estimate of a production deployment and to discuss detailed dimensioning requirements, contact your Juniper Partner or Juniper Sales Representative.

The bare minimum resources required for each of the nodes in a Routing Director deployment cluster are:

Additional resources for optional capabilities

The hardware requirements in Table 1 are the minimum requirements for a standard Routing Director deployment. If an optional use case is enabled, add the resources shown below to each node.

If both use cases are enabled, add the resources from both tables to the minimum base requirements.

AI/ML

When AI/ML is enabled, add 30% to the base CPU, memory, and storage requirements for each node. The calculated additions have been rounded up to whole resource units in Table 2.

Table 2: Hardware requirements with the AI-ML use case
Additional Resources Per Node Four-node Cluster Three-node Cluster Single-node Cluster
CPU +5 vCPU +8 vCPU +10 vCPU
Memory +10 GB RAM +15 GB RAM +20 GB RAM
Storage +154 GB SSD +154 GB SSD +154 GB SSD

Routing Observability

When Routing Observability is enabled, add 8 vCPU and 16 GB RAM across the full cluster. These resources are distributed evenly across all nodes and rounded up to whole resource units in Table 3. In addition, add 1-TB of storage to every node.

Table 3: Hardware requirements with the routing observability use case
Additional Resources Per Node Four-node Cluster Three-node Cluster Single-node Cluster
CPU +2 vCPU +3 vCPU +8 vCPU
Memory +4 GB RAM +6 GB RAM +16 GB RAM
Storage +1 TB SSD +1 TB SSD +1 TB SSD
Warning: These are the bare minimum requirements to configure a cluster, routing observability and AI/ML features. To get an estimate of the resources required to configure these features on your production deployments, contact your Juniper Partner or Juniper Sales Representative.

The host servers must have enough CPU, memory, and disk space to accommodate the hardware resources listed in this section.
