QFX5140 Overview
Learn about the hardware features, architecture, and capabilities of the QFX5140 switch.
Meet the QFX5140 Switch
The QFX5140-24CD8O Switch is a high-performance 1 rack-unit (U) data center switch that you can deploy as a leaf or spine device in modern IP fabric and EVPN-VXLAN architectures. The platform is based on Trident 5 ASIC and delivers high-density 400G and 800G connectivity.
The switch provides 24 ports that house QSFP112 transceivers supporting up to 400-gigabit per second (Gbps) speed and eight ports that house OSFP transceivers supporting up to 800-Gbps speed.. These ports support flexible speeds, including 25 Gbps, 50 Gbps, 100 Gbps, 200 Gbps, 400 Gbps, and 800 Gbps, with multiple breakout configurations. This flexibility makes the QFX5140 an optimal choice for high-bandwidth workloads such as cloud computing, AI/ML, and high-performance computing (HPC).
The QFX5140 platform supports advanced routing and switching features and delivers low latency, high throughput, and scalable performance for next-generation data center deployments.

Hardware Architecture
The QFX5140 switch architecture includes a main board with a Trident 5 ASIC, a CPU subsystem based on Intel Ice Lake-D, and modular, field-replaceable components for power and cooling.
The platform supports both front-to-back (airflow out) and back-to-front (airflow in) airflow configurations. The switch includes hot-swappable fan trays and redundant power supplies to ensure continuous operation.

System Software
The QFX5140 switch runs Junos OS Evolved software. You can configure and manage the switch through the command-line interface (CLI) using the console or management interfaces.
The platform supports standard Junos OS Evolved operational and configuration capabilities, including interface configuration, monitoring, and system management.
Component Redundancy
-
Power supplies: Two hot-swappable PSUs provide 1+1 redundancy. Use separate power sources to ensure full redundancy.
-
Cooling: The cooling system consists of six fan modules with each fan module containing two rotors. The cooling system offers N+1 redundancy only at the rotor level. If more than one rotor of any fan module fails and is unable to keep the QFX5140 switch within desired temperature thresholds, chassis alarms occur and the QFX5140 switch shuts down.
Field-Replaceable Units
These components can be replaced without powering off the switch:
| FRU | Description |
|---|---|
| Power supplies | Hot-swappable; maintain redundancy when replacing |
| Fan trays | Hot-swappable; required for proper cooling |
| Optics | Hot-pluggable |
