Configure Junos OS Evolved on the PTX10002-60MR

This topic guides you through the initial configuration of your PTX10002-60MR by using the CLI.

Access the CLI on the PTX10002-60MR

To access the CLI on your device:
  1. Verify that the device is powered on.
  2. Connect the management device to the serial console port.
  3. Start your asynchronous terminal emulation application (such as Microsoft Windows HyperTerminal) and select the appropriate COM port to use (for example, COM1).
  4. Configure the serial port settings with the following values:

    • Baud rate—9600

    • Parity—N

    • Data bits—8

    • Stop bits—1

    • Flow control—none

  5. Power on the device. You can start performing initial software configuration on the device after the device is up.
    Note:

    After you complete the initial configuration, you can connect your device to a network for out-of-band management.

Configure Root Authentication and Management Interface from the CLI

You must perform the initial configuration of the device through the console port.

Gather the following information before configuring the device:

  • Root authentication

  • IP address of the management interface

  • IP address of the default gateway

  • IP address of a DNS server

To configure root authentication and the management interface:

  1. Log in as the root user. A password is not required.
  2. Start the CLI and enter configuration mode.
  3. Set the root authentication password. You can enter a cleartext password, an encrypted password, or an SSH public key string (DSA or RSA).
  4. (Optional) Configure the host name of the device.
  5. Commit the configuration to activate it on the device.
  6. Configure the IP address and prefix length for the Ethernet management interface on the device.
  7. Configure the default route.
  8. Enable SSH access on the device.
  9. Configure the IP address of a DNS server.
  10. Commit the configuration changes.

Perform the Initial Software Configuration for the Router

Before you begin connecting and configuring a PTX10002-60MR, set the following parameter values on the management console or console server:

  • Baud rate—9600

  • Flow control—None

  • Data—8

  • Parity—None

  • Stop bits—1

  • DCD state—Disregard

You can provision the router through the console port using the CLI or through zero-touch provisioning (ZTP). To provision the router using ZTP, you’ll need access to a Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) server and a File Transfer Protocol (anonymous FTP), Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), or Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) server on which the software image and configuration files are stored.

To connect and configure the router using the CLI:

  1. Connect the console port to a laptop or PC by using the supplied RJ-45 cable and RJ-45 to DB-9 adapter. The console port (labeled CON) is located on the management panel of the router (see ../../ptx10002-36qdd/topics/topic-map/ptx10002-36qdd-connect-external.html#id_nf2_xt5_ywb for more information).
    Note:

    We no longer include the RJ-45 console cable with the DB-9 adapter as part of the device package. If the console cable and adapter are not included in your device package, or if you need a different type of adapter, you can order the following separately:

    • RJ-45 to DB-9 adapter (JNP-CBL-RJ45-DB9)

    • RJ-45 to USB-A adapter (JNP-CBL-RJ45-USBA)

    • RJ-45 to USB-C adapter (JNP-CBL-RJ45-USBC)

    If you want to use RJ-45 to USB-A or RJ-45 to USB-C adapter, you must have X64 (64-Bit) Virtual COM port (VCP) driver installed on your PC. See https://ftdichip.com/drivers/vcp-drivers/ to download the driver.
  2. Log in as root. There is no password. If the software boots before you connect to the console port, you might need to press the Enter key for the prompt to appear.
  3. Start the CLI.
  4. Enter configuration mode.
  5. Add a password to the root administration user account.
  6. (Optional) Configure the name of the router. If the name includes spaces, enclose the name in quotation marks (“ ”).
  7. Configure the default gateway.
  8. Configure the IP address and prefix length for the management interface.
  9. (Optional) Configure the static routes to remote prefixes with access to the management port.
  10. Enable the Telnet service.
    Note:

    When Telnet is enabled, you cannot log in to the router through Telnet by using root credentials. Root login is allowed only for SSH access.
  11. Commit the configuration to activate it on the router.
    Note:

    The PTX10002-60MR typically boots in about 5 minutes. The number of ports in use and the configuration applied to each port can affect the total boot time.
